The possibility of life on planet mars ??has been one of the driving force behind various scientific explorations. If you have seen the movie Total Recall (1990) Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the character who knows the secrets of reaching mars and people try to kidnap him to know the corporate secrets required for reaching mars etc……..
The fictional movie has depicted about a dream which comes true. But for most people It’s only a dream to be narrated to kids. ? ?
But have you heard about the company MarsOne which is aiming to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars ! ?They are trying extremely hard to build the tools that would shape this dream into a reality. ? ❤.check out the image below.
We don’t know if it is really possible for human beings to survive on mars but one thing has been proved many times that a machine is always capable of surviving on mars. These are the images of mars curiosity rover,a high end robot built by NASA.
A Mars rover is an automated motor vehicle which is capable of characterising the weather, climate and to determine if life really arose already on mars. This vehicle is capable of making very advanced and sophisticated analysis using a very remote robotic control. It is even able to make experiments on a piece of rock and sent the results back to the scientists on earth ! ? ?Here’s a picture of Spirit rover.
There’s No GPS for Space .The Deep Space Network, a collection of antenna arrays in California, Australia, and Spain, is the only navigation tool for space.
To get there, Spirit and Opportunity, the two Mars Exploration Rovers launched this past June and July, will have to fly through about 483 million kilometers (300 million miles) of deep space and target a very precise spot to land. The Spirit and Opportunity rovers were named through a student essay competition. The winning entry was by Sofi Collis, a third-grade Russian-American student from Arizona.
“ I used to live in an orphanage. It was dark and cold and lonely. At night, I looked up at the sparkly sky and felt better. I dreamed I could fly there. In America, I can make all my dreams come true. Thank you for the ‘Spirit’ and the ‘Opportunity.’
— Sofi Collis, age 9
If getting to Mars is hard, landing there is even harder. The road to the launch pad is nearly as daunting as the journey to Mars. Even before the trip to Mars can begin, a craft must be built that not only can make the arduous trip but can complete its science mission once it arrives. Nothing less than exceptional technology and planning is required. Here’s a picture of Spirit’s lander on mars.
Challenges faced by rovers during mars mission
Mars is a particularly tricky body to land on. Its atmosphere is 1 percent as dense as that of Earth at sea level too thick for missions to rely solely on retrorockets to touch down, but too thin for just parachutes and air friction to do the job.(you don’t want your rover to hang in mid air in mars and never touch ground !).
A lot of space debris that move to and fro are the main issue. . The US Space Surveillance Network has eyes on 17,000 objects each at least the size of a softball—hurtling around Earth at speeds of more than 17,500 mph; if you count pieces under 10 centimeters, it’s closer to 500,000 objects.
