As it is always said “There are three things men always talk about – women, sports, and cars.”When it comes to cars, people always want something new from the car manufacturing companies. An autonomous car is an example of a new innovation that takes us one step closer to the future.

An autonomous car or a robot car is nothing but a car ? which is able to sense its environment and doesn’t necessarily require the help of any input from the driver. As an autonomous vehicle, it is capable of sensing its environment and navigating without human input. You can get an idea of it from the picture shown below.

Some of the benefits of an autonomous car are reduction in traffic collisions ,resulting injuries, and related costs?, including a lower need for insurance. Autonomous cars are also predicted to offer major increases in traffic flow, enhanced mobility for children, the elderly, disabled and poor people; the relief of travelers from driving and navigation chores; lower fuel consumption; significantly reduced needs for parking space in cities, a reduction in crime, etc

Below are a few snaps of cars that have been recently developed

The google car,Waymo  shown on the top is still under development which would really surprise you with the things that it can do. The car itself is extremely innovative, technical, and advanced. This car has sensors and softwares that are most advanced and state-of-the-art ?.The most advanced and the centerpiece of the car is the Light Detection and Ranging technology (LIDAR).

Here is a video presenting  how the autonomouscar looks like while on the road ! ?

Many countries in Europe and America are testing autonomous cars with different technologies worldwide. In Europe, cities in Belgium, France, Italy and the UK are planning to operate transport systems for driverless cars.

Difference between autonomous and automated car

Autonomous car – Car which is self governing and never requires an input from the driver.

Automated car – Car which is functional by itself but would require the need of input from cloud servers, communication with other cars and so on.

Nowadays it is a trend to use the word autonomous even if the car might be automated. This article will deal with the car which never requires an input from the driver.

Let’s take a look at the World’s first commercially available driverless car by France-based robotics company Induct.

The Navia shuttle — which can carry up to eight passengers — launched on Monday at the 2014 International CES show in Las Vegas, making it the world’s first commercially available self-driving vehicle. “It’s a bit like a lift,” says Induct’s head of business development, Adrian Sussmann. “If it gets stuck it stops and you just press a call button to get help.” “Users can summon Navia from their smartphones like an Uber for driverless cars or call it up from their desktop.”This vehicle will cost you around $250,000 or 1 crore 66 lakhs indian rupees.

Disadvantages of autonomous car

  • Resistance for individuals to forfeit control of their cars.
  • Software reliability.
  • Cyber Security
  • Implementation of legal framework and establishment of government regulations for self-driving cars
  • Reliance on autonomous drive produces less experienced drivers for when manual drive is needed.
  • Loss of driver-related jobs
  • Loss of privacy.

What about flying cars ?!

Airbus has revealed about its new concept of an autonomous flying vehicle at Geneva motor show. This vehicle is capable of both functioning as a car and a plane at the same time !
